Island Inspired Memories in Every Thread

Ten years ago, my family visited Bald Head Island for the first time. Since then, nearly every year, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and immediate family gather from all along the East Coast to this tranquil place, a hidden gem too good to keep secret.

The island, just a 30-minute ferry ride from the mainland, feels like a journey back in time. With only a post office, a chapel, a market, a restaurant, and a couple of boutiques, transportation is limited to bikes and golf carts. This simplicity draws us together, ensuring we spend each evening as a family, making memories that last us until we return the next year.

We've witnessed a sea turtle making her midnight trek up the beach to lay her eggs, watched a strawberry moon grazing the horizon, and seen shooting stars and constellations previously unknown to us while stargazing.

When I imagine heaven, I picture the point where East meets South Beach. There, you can walk on the shoals for 5 minutes with the water barely reaching your ankles. This ethereal spot is my happy place, where the minimal temperature difference between the air and ocean fosters pure relaxation.

The contrast between the beautiful beach homes and the unforgiving marshes and jungle-like terrain never ceases to intrigue me. My curiosity led me to learn about the pioneers of island in the 1970s who built their homes, lived off generators, and faced the island's harsh conditions—all for the beauty of the shoals.
